So if you're a member of Generation X - that generation sandwiched in between the baby boomers and the millennials - there's a good chance you remember the first time you heard these chords.

The song became an anthem for a generation that was ambivalent about traditional values and jaded with mainstream culture. It's April Nirvana hasn't even recorded "Smells Like Teen Spirit" yet, so nearly everyone in the audience is hearing the song for the first time.

And no one knew what a big deal it would go on to be - including Jennie Boddy. She was a friend of the band and a publicist for Sub Pop Records, the indie label that put out Nirvana's first record, "Bleach. And she was like, I can't believe what they just played. It was just instantaneous. It was crazy. They were at the cutting edge of a wave that was labeled grunge. And the band's new album, "Nevermind," came out a few months later on a major label. And suddenly, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was all over the radio.

And nine months after they played the song live for the first time, Nirvana was performing it on "Saturday Night Live. HSU: Like millions of kids my age, like, this was the first thing that felt like it was mine. And as a teenager, I think you're really trying to figure out your place in the world. And I think this song in particular felt so ambivalent about its own success.

ROSE: Oh, well. Never mind. Those words cut right to the heart of Generation X - kids who were born in the s and '70s. It's perfect for the generation it represented because this was a cohort that was so ambivalent about any traditional values - you know, conventional success.

ROSE: There's that word again - ambivalence. Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain was famously ambivalent about the band's success. Jennie Boddy, now vice president for publicity at Capitol Records, says you can see that in the handmade T-shirt Cobain wore for the band's photo shoot with Rolling Stone magazine. But what are you supposed to say?

Laughter A mosquito, my libido - that's the spokesperson. ROSE: Cobain often warned interviewers against reading too much into his lyrics. And a lot of times when I write lyrics, it's usually at the last second because I'm really lazy.

So - and then I find myself having to come up with explanations for it. I think he worked as carefully on the lyrics as he did on everything else. He's written a memoir about Cobain called "Serving The Servant. The song mocks the culture of mainstream arena rock while at the same time celebrating the joys of listening to your favorite underground band in a dimly lit club.

Here we are now; entertain us. It was rock 'n' roll and kind of an ironic commentary on rock 'n' roll at the same time. That was the genius of the song is it combined a fierce commentary on shallowness while still having mass appeal musicality. I feel stupid and contagious. And you just want to scream that. You're all in unison, just feeling the same way. But the band had dropped "Smells Like Teen Spirit" from its live shows. Cobain openly worried that the band was attracting the kind of fans he would have hated in high school.

He championed feminism and gay rights. And he wrote this in the liner notes for one of Nirvana's albums - quote, "if any of you in any way hate homosexuals, people of different color or women, please do this one favor for us - leave us the [expletive] alone.

Don't come to our shows, and don't buy our records," unquote. It's exactly what teenagers go through when they are trying to come into their own authority and power but they're also questioning everything around them and questioning their own self-worth. Kurt Cobain captured that adolescent feeling better than anybody of his generation.

Powers says the tragedy of his death has also become part of how we hear "Smells Like Teen Spirit" today. And that, also, now is part of the meaning of the song. ROSE: It's one more way the song has become an anthem for a generation that didn't want one.

Smells Like Teen Spirit, a song by Nirvana on Spotify

It is the opening track and lead single from the band's second album, Nevermind , released on DGC Records. The unexpected success propelled Nevermind to the top of the charts at the start of , an event often marked as the point where grunge entered the mainstream. The song was dubbed an "anthem for apathetic kids" of Generation X , [5] [6] but the band grew uncomfortable with the attention it brought them.

In the years since Kurt Cobain 's death, listeners and critics have continued to praise "Smells Like Teen Spirit" as one of the greatest songs in the history of rock music. Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain said that "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was an attempt to write a song in the style of the Pixies , a band he greatly admired:.

I was trying to write the ultimate pop song. I was basically trying to rip off the Pixies. I have to admit it. When I heard the Pixies for the first time, I connected with that band so heavily that I should have been in that band—or at least a Pixies cover band. We used their sense of dynamics, being soft and quiet and then loud and hard.

Cobain came up with the song's title when his friend Kathleen Hanna , at the time the lead singer of the riot grrrl band Bikini Kill , wrote "Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit" on his wall. Cobain said he was unaware of the deodorant until months after the single was released, and had interpreted it as a revolutionary slogan, as they had been discussing anarchism and punk rock. Cobain began writing it a few weeks before recording Nirvana's second album, Nevermind , in In response, Cobain made the band play the riff for an hour and a half.

Prior to the Nevermind recording sessions, the band sent Vig demos for songs including "Teen Spirit". While the sound was distorted due to the band playing at a volume, Vig felt the song had promise.

Cobain recorded only three vocal takes; according to Vig, "I was lucky to ever get Kurt to do four takes. This structure of "quiet verses with wobbly, chorused guitar, followed by big, loud hardcore -inspired choruses" became an alternative rock template. During the verses, the band maintains the same chord progression as the chorus. Cobain plays a two-note guitar line over Novoselic's root-note eighth note bassline, which outlines the chord progression.

Approaching the chorus, Cobain begins to play the same two notes on every beat of the measure and repeats the word "Hello". The song did not initially chart, and sold well only in regions of the United States with an established Nirvana fanbase. The single was intended to be a base-building alternative rock cut from the album, and not expected to be a hit; the follow-up single "Come as You Are" was planned as the single that could cross over to mainstream formats.

However, campus radio and modern rock radio stations placed "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on heavy rotation. Danny Goldberg of Nirvana's management firm Gold Mountain said: "None of us heard it as a crossover song, but the public heard it and it was instantaneous They heard it on alternative radio, and then they rushed out like lemmings to buy it. The video received its world premiere on MTV's late-night alternative rock program Minutes , and proved so popular that the channel began to air it during its regular daytime rotation.

By the end of the year, the song, music video, and the Nevermind album had become hits. The single peaked at number six on the Billboard singles chart the same week that Nevermind reached number one on the albums chart. The single was also successful in other countries. It charted within the top five of several European countries and reached number five in Australia. Just don't call Cobain a spokesman for a generation.

Nirvana grew uncomfortable with the song's success, and in later concerts often excluded it from the set list. There are no 'Teen Spirits' on In Utero. Everyone has focused on that song so much.

In the years following Cobain's suicide and Nirvana's breakup, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" has continued to garner critical acclaim, and is often listed as one of the greatest songs of all time. In an attempt to emulate a successful Facebook campaign to promote Rage Against the Machine 's song " Killing in the Name ", an online campaign was launched to promote "Smells Like Teen Spirit" to Christmas number one in the UK Singles Chart in protest at the dealings of The X Factor television series with the children's charity Rhythmix.

The lyrics to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" were often difficult for listeners to decipher, both due to their nonsensicality and because of Cobain's slurred, guttural singing voice. This problem was compounded by the fact that the Nevermind album liner notes did not include any lyrics for the songs aside from selected lyrical fragments. This incomprehensibility contributed to the early resistance from radio stations towards adding the song to their playlists; one Geffen promoter recalled that people from rock radio told her, "We can't play this.

I can't understand what the guy is saying. American rock critic Dave Marsh noted comments by disc jockeys of the time that the song was "the ' Louie Louie ' of the nineties" and wrote, "Like 'Louie', only more so, 'Teen Spirit' reveals its secrets reluctantly and then often incoherently.

Azerrad's conclusion is that the song is "alternately a sarcastic reaction to the idea of actually having a revolution, yet it also embraces the idea". Cross ' biography of Cobain, Cross argues that the song is a reference to Cobain's relationship with ex-girlfriend Tobi Vail.

Cross cites the line "She's over-bored and self-assured" and states the song "could not have been about anyone else". It also has kind of a teen revolutionary theme. It's just making fun of the thought of having a revolution. But it's a nice thought. You need syllables to fill up this space or you need something that rhymes.

Bayer believed he was hired because his test reel was so poor the band anticipated his production would be "punk" and "not corporate". The video was filmed August 17, [80] on a soundstage in Culver City. The music video features Nirvana playing at a pep rally in a high school gym to an audience of apathetic students on bleachers, and cheerleaders wearing black dresses with the Circle-A anarchist symbol.

The video features an appearance by Burton C. Bell , later known as frontman of heavy metal band Fear Factory. The video ends with the students destroying the set and the band's gear. The discontent was genuine; the extras that filled the bleachers had been forced to stay seated through numerous replays of the song for an entire afternoon of filming.

Cobain convinced Bayer to allow the extras to mosh , and the set became a scene of chaos. Cobain had the principal's footage entirely removed as well as most of the teacher's footage, aside from the ending scene which shows the teacher tied to the pole as the janitor sweeps the floor nearby.

Like the song itself, the music video for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" received positive reviews. Rolling Stone writer David Fricke described the video as looking like "the greatest gig you could ever imagine".
