Ten or 15 years ago, at the tail-end of Uncool Britannia, we seemed to get a new one every week. We are the Freaks, from writer-director Justin Edgar, is set in the 90s and looks at first as if it is going to satirise these 90s cliches. But actually we don't get anything other than more cliches: the film is made up of secondhand ideas, characters and riffs. Jamie Blackley plays Jack, a bloke hanging round in his hometown one summer, waiting for a grant those were the days to go to uni to study creative writing.

His mad friend Chunks Sean Teale and nerdy, useless friend Parsons Mike Bailey are up for a night out, but Jack is still mooning around, thinking about pretty girl-next-door Elinor Amber Anderson who is much more cool than she looks.

Michael Smiley does his best with the role of lairy drug-dealer Killer Colin. Production standards are high enough, but, as so depressingly often with indie Britfilms, this is a script that wouldn't pass muster for any British TV series.

The number is and when called, a recorded message with a woman's voice would say, "Thank you for calling the abnormal defense hotline, provided by the Department of Homeland Security. This shortened version—now only 64 minutes long—had its premiere at the Fox Criterion in Los Angeles on February 20, Browning, famed at the time for his collaborations with Lon Chaney and for directing Bela Lugosi in Dracula , had trouble finding work afterward and this effectively brought his career to an early close.

Freaks became the only MGM film ever to be pulled from release before completing its domestic engagements. A number of contemporary reviews were not only highly critical of the film, but expressed outrage and revulsion.

Harrison's Reports wrote that "Any one who considers this entertainment should be placed in the pathological ward in some hospital. Moffitt wrote, "There is no excuse for this picture. It took a weak mind to produce it and it takes a strong stomach to look at it.

Variety also published a negative review, writing that the film was "sumptuously produced, admirably directed, and no cost was spared, but Metro heads failed to realize that even with a different sort of offering the story is still important. Here the story is not sufficiently strong to get and hold the interest, partly because interest cannot easily be gained for too fantastic a romance. And only in such a case will the story appeal. Not all reviews were as harsh. The New York Times called it "excellent at times and horrible, in the strict meaning of the word, at others" as well as "a picture not to be easily forgotten.

John Mosher of The New Yorker wrote a positive review, calling it "a little gem" that "stands in a class by itself, and probably won't be forgotten in a hurry by those who see it. They may hereafter even be regarded in the flesh with a new dread bordering on respect. Its consensus reads, " "Time has been kind to this horror legend: Freaks manages to frighten, shock, and even touch viewers in ways that contemporary viewers missed. Beginning in the early s, Freaks was rediscovered as a counterculture cult film and throughout the s and s, the film was regularly shown at midnight movie screenings at several theaters in the United States.

This site uses cookies. By using this site you are agreeing to our privacy and cookie policy. The misadventures of three misfit mates provide the basis of a likable, breezy British teen comedy in We Are The Freaks. The impressive performances and buzz of energy in the film help overcome a certain air of familiarity and a slight running time suggesting modest theatrical potential for Metrodome who will release in the UK.

Initially focusing on Jack, We Are The Freaks adopts a knowing, self-referential approach in his direct to camera speeches and cynical asides. Jack Blackley is working in a bank, reading Bukowski and dreaming of heading off to university. Chunks Sean Teale is one of the idle rich, happy to indulge his lack of ambition.

Over the course of an eventful evening they all learn lessons about life, love and the unpredictability of the adult world. The tone changes as it blossoms into an ensemble piece that lightly conveys the end of an era in the political life of Britain and garlands the story with a soundtrack that includes New Order, the Happy Mondays and The Cramps.

Jamie Blackley, Sean Teale, Mike Bailey all display the expert comic timing, confidence and talent that should earn them a bright future. Screen International is the essential resource for the international film industry.
